THE OTAGO WITNESS
13 Aug 1859
The "Avonvale" from London, which had been
anxiously looked for for sometime past, arrived at
the Heads on Tuesday morning, having left
Gravesend on the 7th April. The length of her
passage, we understand, was attributable to a suc-
cession of adverse winds and stormy weather which
she experienced after passing the Downs. She has
brought 22 passengers, and a large cargo entirely
for this place. A considerable quantity of goods
was shut out as she was about to sail, in consequence
of the vessel having previously been obliged to fill
up with a quantity of stone.
The steamer "Pirate" went outside the Heads on
Thursday afternoon, about 4 o'clock, and towed the
"Avonvale" in to Driver's Point.
